Mark 9:33-35
“After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, ‘What were you discussing out on the road?’ But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.” Mark 9:33-34 (p.770)
“He sat down, ‘Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.’” Mark 9:35 (p.770)
- I Will Be The Servant of Everyone Else.
“But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.” Luke 22:24 (p.805)
- See opportunities to serve.
“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too” Philippians 2:3-4 (p.900)
- Serve and keep serving.
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:9 (p.894)
- Remember who you ultimately serve.
“We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.” Hebrews 12:2 (p.927)
Series Memory Verse: “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19 (p.760)

Digging Deeper
We have a Lord and King who interacts with us every day. Our jobs/roles may change over time, but Jesus does not. We are called to serve Him. When we serve Him, we must also be serving others.
Picking up on the second of this week’s Next Step, have you ever wondered where to serve or what your gifts are? Have you tried taking the test to learn about your spiritual gifts? Ask your church leaders if they have any kind of instrument that can help you do this. This will help you start to narrow down the field if you are not sure where to serve.
Your gifts can change over the years, so if you haven’t taken the test in a while it would be worthwhile doing it again.
Take a few minutes to look at how Jesus took on the role of a servant by washing the disciples’ feet: John 13:1-17. What stands out in the passage for you and why? Looking at verses 12-16, how does that compare with the passage we looked at the weekend Mark 9:33-35? How challenging do you find these verses? Do you struggle with them?
