It’s Time
At The Movies: Home Edition – Part 6
July 25-26, 2020
Pastor Steve Tanner, Pastor Jason Marsden, Kyle Hammond

“I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” Philippians 3:13b-14 (p.901)

  • It’s Time To Do What I Was Meant To Do.

To do what I’m meant to do:

  1. Pursue my God-given purpose. (Also see notes from Week 4 of At the Movies.)

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 (p.896)

  1. Ask for help.

“Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.” Proverbs 27:6 (p.500)

“Encourage each other and build each other up.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11a (p.907)

  1. Find Joy in whatever God has for me.

“Whatever happens, my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord.” Philippians 3:1a (p.900)

“I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun!Isaiah 43:19a (p.550)

Next Step: ___Every day I will ask God to help me do one thing that I’m meant to do that day:

“God, please help me focus on this one thing: that I forget the past and look forward to what lies ahead as I press on to do one thing that I am meant to do today.”

Discussion Guide from the Weekend Talk

From the Weekend Talk of July 25-26, 2020
At The Movies: Home Edition – Part 6: It’s Time

Use this Discussion Guide to dig deeper into the principles from the weekend talk. Our Life Groups use them, but we encourage you to discuss them with your family, or over the phone or online with friends.

Yes, our Life Groups continue to meet, ONLINE! Life Groups use these questions to go deeper into what we talked about this weekend. Dig into them so you will be ready for the discussion at your Life Group. Please let us know if you would like to join a group. We are also looking for opportunities to begin NEW ONLINE Groups.

Conversation Starters

  • Do you enjoy sports themed movies? What’s your favorite? If your answer was “no” what is your favorite kind of movie?
  • Are you glad that the Major Leagues have started playing baseball again? Have you watched any games yet?
  • Have you ever felt like you were meant to do something but you weren’t quite sure what it was or how to do it?

Quick Review

  • Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out or maybe even confused you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and related Bible verses from this Weekend’s Talk Notes.

  • This week Pastor Steve Tanner, Pastor Jason Marsden, and Kids Ministry Intern Kyle Hammond (The Guys) highlighted One Thing to remember from this Talk: “It’s Time To Do What I Was Meant To Do.
    • Read Philippians 3:12-14 (p.901*)
    • In Philippians 3:4-11 Paul lays out his “pedigree” as one who had reason to trust in “who I am” because of his background as a Jew and as a Pharisee. Then he turns the focus to Jesus and HIS work in Paul’s life. He pivots again to the future in verse 13.
      • Have you ever been in a position to feel like you have “made it” simply because of who you are?
      • Have you lived in such a way that you felt like your success was completely up to you?
      • What are you “pressing on” towards in your faith? In your life?
    • The Guys discussed Three Steps to doing what you are meant to do:
  1. Pursue my God-given purpose. (Ephesians 2:10 (p.896*)) (See also the archived Talk Notes from At the Movies Week 4 to help you further unpack “purpose.” Find the notes at alivechurch.com message-archive)
    • Have you ever thought about what your God-given purpose is, no matter your age or how long you have been a Follower of Jesus?
    • Have you ever sensed God changing or re-directing your purpose—what you were meant to do?
    • What are some implications of embracing the truth of Ephesians 2:10?
  2. Ask for help. (Proverbs 27:6 (p.500*) and Philippians 3:1 (p.900*))
    • Who do you have (or have you had) in your life who cared enough about you to tell you the truth?
    • Who encourages you? How? When?
    • Do YOU encourage others? How do you do it? How do you balance “truth” with “encouragement”? Are they mutually exclusive?
  3. Find Joy in whatever God has for me. (Isaiah 43:19 (p.550*))
    • What have been some of the most joyful times of your life?
    • Have you ever been joyful even when the circumstances around you didn’t seem all that great?
    • In a practical sense, how do you choose to be joyful, even in difficult circumstances? What can you do? How can you encourage joy in others (or in your children)?

Digging Deeper

Some other food for thought and discussion:

  • In Rick Warren’s groundbreaking book, The Purpose-Driven Life, he talks about the benefits of Purpose-Driven Living. Let’s call it, “Doing what I am meant to do.” Talk about each of the five.
  1. Doing what I am meant to do gives meaning to my life. (See Ephesians 3:20 (p.896*))
  2. Doing what I am meant to do simplifies my life. “Does this activity help me fulfill one of God’s purposes for my life?” (See 1 Timothy 6:6 (p.912*) and Isaiah 26:3 (p.535*)
  3. Doing what I am meant to do focuses my life. (See Ephesians 5:17 (p.898*)
  4. Doing what I am meant to do motivates my life. (See Colossians 3:17, 23 (p.904*)
  5. Doing what I am meant to do prepares me for eternity. (Philippians 1:27 (p.899*)

Next Step

My Next Step: ____ Every day I will ask God to help me do one thing that I’m meant to do that day:

“God, please help me focus on this one thing: that I forget the past and look forward to what lies ahead as I press on to do one thing that I am meant to do today.”
