Bloodline – Part 2: God Had A Plan

Bloodline – Part 2: God Had A Plan

God Had A Plan
Bloodline,  Part 2
April 6 – 7, 2019
Dr. Jeffrey Allen Love

“And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith.” Genesis 15:6

“(Abram) how can I be sure that I will actually possess it?” The Lord told him, “Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” So Abram presented all these to him and killed them. Then he cut each animal down the middle and laid the halves side by side…Some vultures swooped down to eat the carcasses, but Abram chased them away.Genesis 15:8-11

(Berith): Covenant  – To cut, to bind together in obligation.

  • Everything God Does Is Based On Covenant.

“Some time later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called. “Yes,” he replied. “Here I am.” “Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”… He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac…On the third day of their journey, Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance… So Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac’s shoulders… Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father?”…”We have the fire and the wood,” the boy said, “but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” “God will provide a sheep…” Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice…the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham!…”Don’t lay a hand on the boy!”…”Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.” Genesis 22: 1-12

(Jesus) said, “It is finished!…” John 19:30

“Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.” Mark 15:37-38

  1. Understand authority.
  2. Realize our power is real.
  3. Stand firm.

“Some vultures swooped down to eat the carcasses, but Abram chased them away.Genesis 15:11

Next Step: ____ This week I’m asking God to help me to see who I am in light of the cross.

Read daily:

I am limitlessly and unconditionally loved.
I am now in covenant with God through the Lord Jesus.
I have been included into Christ and am now alive in Him.
The Spirit is within me, pouring out the love of God in my heart.
My body is the dwelling of the Spirit.

Life Groups Study Questions
Taking the Talk to Another Level
For the Week of April 7, 2019

Life Groups use these questions to dig deeper into what we talked about this weekend as we do life together in relationships. Find out more about Groups and how to get signed up by checking the “Groups” box on your Connection Card, getting a “Groups Brochure” at the Info Center in the Lobby, going to, or email us at

Connection Points

  • When have you made a promise to live by some sort of agreement? Did you see it as a positive thing or negative?
  • Let’s play word association! What is first thing that comes to mind when you hear with these words: “obligation,” “commitment,” “promise.”

Quick Review

  • Looking back at your Talk Notes, did anything you heard in the service particularly catch your attention, or maybe challenge or even confuse you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Pastor Jeff continued our “Bloodline” Series with Part 2: “God Had a Plan.” Our big idea was to remember, “Everything God Does Is Based On Covenant.”

  • Read Genesis 22:1-12.
    • Make note of the prophetic, foreshadowing similarities between the accounts of Abraham and Isaac, and Jesus.
    • “Your only son”
    • “Moriah”
    • “On the third day”
    • “Wood… on Isaac’s shoulders”
    • “Not withheld… your only son”
  • When you read these parallels, what are some of your thoughts?
    • About God?
    • About The Bible?
  • Read John 19:30 and Mark 15:37-38 and Genesis 15:11
    • What does it mean to you to know that “It is finished!”
    • Why is it significant that the temple curtain was torn from top to bottom? What does this signify?
  • Jeff encouraged us to “Understand Authority,” “Realize our power is real,” and “Stand firm.”
    • Talk about how applying these points is relevant to your life.
    • What was significant about Abraham chasing the vultures away?

Digging Deeper

  • Read Genesis 15:6-11, 17-18
    • God is establishing His Covenant with Abram (later, Abraham).
    • Covenant (Hebrew = Berith) – To cut, to bind together in obligation.
    • God makes a one-sided covenant with Abram. In other words, God is the only one who passes between the animal carcasses in this “blood covenant.” Abram does not do it. God makes the covenant with Himself. Abram’s only response is the “yes” of faith.
      • Sound familiar?
    • Covenant is a fascinating topic. Pastor Jeff prepared a document for us that unpacks more of what covenant is. You won’t have time to walk through all of this during your Group, so use it in your personal study, as well.

  1. “Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form…” Philippians 2:7
  1. I Have Christ’s Power In Me. (Exchange Strengths)
    1. “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13-14

        1. “He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News.” 2 Timothy 1:10-11
      2. His Enemy: Satan
        1. “In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.” Colossians 2:15
        2. Christ Disarmed Satan on the Cross. Satan’s only Power Now Is: Accuse. Blame. Lie.
      3. Jesus’ Blood Sacrifice Makes Me Holy. (Sacrificial animal cut. Blood covenant)
        1. “Under the old system, the high priest brought the blood of animals into the Holy Place as a sacrifice for sin, and the bodies of the animals were burned outside the camp. So also Jesus suffered and died outside the city gates to make his people holy by means of his own blood.” Hebrews 13:11-13
      4. I Give Up My Rights And Take On Christ Rights (Walk of death: giving up my rights)
        1. “If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it.” Luke 17:33-34
        2. We now have rights of Children – Jesus is God’s only son – we become adopted children with the rights of king’s kids…
          1. “See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1
        3. I Have A New Life (New Covenant Mark)
          1. “When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature… and with Him you were raised to new life…” Colossians 2:11
          2. Baptism a great example.
            1. Outward ritual means nothing if it does not have an inward reality…
          3. I Have All The Blessings of Abraham. (Pronouncement of Blessings and Curses)
            1. “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ…” Philippians 4:19
            2. Great news – Cruse is broken…gone:
            3. “When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing.” Galatians 3:13
          4. I Have Become One With Christ. (Covenant meal.)
            1. “…Jesus took some bread…he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you…he took the cup of wine saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me…”  1 Corinthians 11:23-26
          5. I Have A New Name. (Exchange of names)
            1. Jesus became the son of man.
            2. We become Christians: “Christ Man.”
            3. “Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” John 14:14
          6. Jesus gave His life for my sin. (Exchange of First-Born Son)
            1. Jesus defeated death and sin altogether!
            2. “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.” Romans 8:1-2
