  • When Jesus Is My Foundation, I Can Conquer Storms.

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” Psalm 46:1 (p.434)

  1. Listen to Jesus’ teaching.

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.Matthew 7:24-25 (p.738)

  1. Obey Jesus’ teaching.

“But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” Matthew 7:26-27 (p.738)

“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”James 1:22 (p.930)

Week 2 Small Group Guide

One Thing: When Jesus Is My Foundation, I Can Conquer Storms.

Bible Story: Matthew 7:24-29

Memory Verse: “Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.” Romans 12:21

CONVERSATION STARTER

// Have you ever been caught in a big storm? Tell an abbreviated version of your experience and how you felt.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

During Jesus’ time, people would only build in the summer. The winters would bring fierce rains, storms, and occasionally snow. The summers would provide builders with the best conditions to seek out the right foundations to build on. Underlying rock was spread out all through Israel, in some cases, it would be found just inches under the surface. In other cases, it was many feet underground. If a builder decided not to dig and find a solid rock to build on, they would often use clay and mortar which would crack and break during the winters and when the storms would come, their house would be unstable and suffer damage.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

// Read Matthew 7:24-25. We are called to Listen to Jesus’ Teaching and know the voice of God.

  • In what ways are you actively listening and experiencing Jesus’ teachings?
  • What does building your life on Jesus as a strong foundation look like in your life?
  • What areas in your life do you need to build on the solid foundation of Jesus’ teaching?

// Read John 10:3-4.

  • Have you heard the words of Jesus and actively built your foundation on His teaching?

// Read Matthew 7:26-27. Notice that the storm hits both houses. Just because we are followers of Jesus and build our lives on Him doesn’t mean that we will not experience difficulties in life.

  • What has it looked like for you to get through the storms of life without Jesus?
  • How has building your life on Jesus changed how you deal with the storms of life?

// Read 1 John 3:24. After hearing Jesus’ teachings, we’re called to Obey Jesus’ Teachings.

  • What are some of the major differences between “listening” and “obeying?”
  • What do you see in this verse that helps us obey? What does obeying look like for you?

// Read James 1:22. Part of enduring the storms of life and standing strong through them is by living out God’s Word in the good times and the bad.

  • Think of a story when you listened but didn’t obey. What were the consequences?
  • When a storm hits how can you trust Him to get through that storm? Think of two practical ways.

NEXT STEP

_____ I will read Matthew 7:24-27 each morning.

DIGGING DEEPER

When we put our faith in Jesus and His power, we can live in His resurrection power. He goes with us through the storm and helps us conquer them successfully. Storms are going to come our way – we’re either in a crisis, heading toward a crisis, or coming out of a crisis. When we lean on our own power, we can be swallowed up by the storm. Read these verses and focus on how Jesus helps us conquer the storms of life and stand strong through Him.
