Series Memory Verse: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good.”
Genesis 50:20a (p.43)

“One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever.” Genesis 37:5 (p.31)

“The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master.” Genesis 39:2 (p. 33)

“’(Jesus)…The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.’John 10:10 (p.819)

  • The Path To Living My Potential Is Personal Growth

I need to continue to grow in:

1. My perspective of troubles.

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” James 1:2-3 (p.930)

“Because of the joy awaiting him, [Jesus] endured the cross, disregarding its shame.” Hebrews 12:2b (p.927)

2. Relational integrity with others even when I am treated wrong.

“He (Potiphar) has held back nothing from me (Joseph) except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.’”
Genesis 39:9 (p.33)

“God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.” Matthew 5:8 (p. 736)

3. My relationship with God daily.

“The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.” Genesis 39:23 (p.33)

My Next Step This Week:
_____I am asking God to help me to grow in # _____ so that I can live in my potential in Him.

Conversation Starters

  • Have you ever seen any of the film or stage adaptations of the life of Joseph? What is your favorite?
  • What has been the funniest workplace mix-up/accident you have seen or had yourself?
  • Have you ever lost a job or suffered a consequence because of a false accusation?
    • What did you learn from it?

Quick Review

Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out, challenged, or maybe even confused you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and Bible verses from the Talk Notes.

This week’s One Thing: The key principle that Pastor Jeff Love emphasized is:

The Path To Living My Potential Is Personal Growth.

  • Background: Genesis 39 (p.33)
    • Genesis 39:2-3 says God was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did, to the point that even Potiphar noticed. We also see this same “notice” in verse 21. Talk about the fact that God was “with” Joseph, people noticed, and yet he still suffered imprisonment from a false accusation.

I need to continue to grow in:

  1. My perspective of troubles.
    (See James 1:2-4 (p.930); Hebrews 12:1-3 (p.927); and Proverbs 24:16 (p.498))
    • What is the “joy” James is talking about?
    • When have you been able to experience this kind of joy, even in the midst of a challenge?
    • The words of the hymn Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus can be both a comfort and an encouragement here: Turn your eyes upon Jesus/Look full in his wonderful face/And the things of earth will grow strangely dim/In the light of his glory and grace.
    • What was the “joy” awaiting Jesus (Hebrews 12:2b)? How do we “run” race?
  2. Relational integrity with others even when I am treated wrong.
    (See Genesis 39:6-9 (p.33); Matthew 5:8 (p.736); and Romans 8:28 (p.826))
    • What does it mean to be “pure in heart”?
    • When have you had to make a decision that was the right thing to do, but you knew it would cost you?
    • How does Romans 8:28 compare with our memory verse for the series, Genesis 50:20a (p.43)?
  3. My Relationship with God daily.
    (See Genesis 39:21-23 (p.33))
    • What helps you have an active, consistent relationship with God?
    • Can you tell a difference in your life when you DON’T connect with God consistently?
    • What are some of your favorite scriptures that help you stay close to God?

Digging Deeper

“Digging Deeper” is an opportunity for you to go a bit further with this week’s Talk topic.

We read how things worked out for Joseph so far, and we will find out more of his story (which we will get to in the next few weeks). We can also see the lives of others who suffered but who God brought through their suffering. David, Paul, Peter, and Jesus come to mind. We see these stories in the Bible and we hear from pastors and teachers and others who have walked through trials and have seen God bring them through. So here’s the Key Question:

  • Why, when we are in the midst of a crisis, do we often take our eyes off Jesus, forgetting the testimonies of others and that God wants the best for us?
  • Just like a child without their floaties for the first time in a swimming pool, we start to splash about in panic!  Take time out to explore this. We’ve all faced it. Write down some thoughts about perhaps what tends to knock you off course, and what is helpful to bring you back. Make a list of scriptures that help you. Memorize one of them. Use it as a basis for your prayers this week. Maybe James 1:2 is a good one to use.
