Discussion/Groups Guide from the Weekend Talk

From the Weekend Talk of October 24-25, 2020
Hold Nothing Back – Part 1: Don’t Hold Back
Life Groups use these questions to go deeper into what we talked about this weekend. Dig into them so you will be ready for the discussion at your Life Group. If you are not in a Group, find out more at alivechurch.com/groups.

You can also use this guide to discuss the Talk with your family or friends.

Conversation Starters

  • Have you ever bartered with God to do something for you and you promised you would do something in return if He answered the way you wanted Him to? Share the story.
  • Do you sometimes find yourself making prayer a last resort? Why?
  • Why do you pray?

Quick Review

  • Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out or maybe even confused you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and related Bible verses from this Weekend’s Talk Notes.

The One Thing from this Talk this past weekend that Pastor Jeff taught was:
We Are Part Of Jesus’ Ministry Through Prayer

  • How does this statement affect the “why” of your prayers?
  • Read John 14:12. Discuss the One Thing in light of this verse. How do you see us living this out currently in our lives, in the church?
  • What keeps you from praying and seeking God as often as you should?
  • “May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10 (p.737) What does this mean to you?

Digging Deeper

  • Read 1 Peter 5:5-9, Proverbs 3:34, and James 4:6.
  • As a group, talk about this definition of humility from the Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible and how it relates to prayer: “Concerning an individual or group, the quality of being “poor,” “needy,” or even “oppressed”; or more subjectively, an individual’s being dependent on God and showing respect for other persons (e.g., “meekness” or “gentleness”). There is no clear distinction between humility and meekness.”
    • In what way does a lack of humility keep someone from listening to God or following God?
    • How important is humility as the foundation for a healthy and successful prayer life?
    • Do you believe humility is an act of will or something that comes naturally to you?
  • How do you live out the teaching notes from Pastor Jeff in humility?
  • Come boldly to the Father.

“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God…” Hebrews 4:16 (p.922)

  • Cast all your burdens on God.

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:7 (p.937)

  • Continue praying.

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.” 1 Peter 5:8-9 (p.937)

  • What changes do you need to make in your attitude and in your life so that your prayer life will honor God rather than yourself and always be in line with His will?

Next Step

My Next Step: I will pray daily this week: “Father, your kingdom come today in my life on earth as it is in heaven.”

What’s Ahead

  • Next week Pastor Steve Tanner will continue with “Hold Nothing Back” part 2. He will be talking about how to pray God’s Word.  When you don’t know what to pray or how to pray, this talk will assure you that you are always praying for God’s will and with the right attitude of humility.
