Discussion/Groups Guide from the Weekend TalkFrom the Weekend Talk of August 14-15, 2021
Influence – Part 3: One Another

Use this guide to discuss the Weekend Talk with your family or friends.

When Life Groups are in session they use questions like these to go deeper into what we talked about on the weekend.

  • Our Fall Groups Semester begins the week of August 22.
  • Find out more about Groups (in person and online) at alivechurch.com/groups.

Conversation Starters

  • Have you ever coached a team? Why?
  • Have you ever coached a team and when they won a game—following your advice/instruction—how did it make you feel?
  • Did you ever teach a child to ride a bike or swim?  Did you feel a sense of achievement when they were able to successfully ride or swim, based on your instructions?
  • When you were young and your father or mother taught you something—perhaps how to cook a particular meal—and you did it on your own, it was a great feeling, wasn’t it? Then you taught the same recipe to your child or close friend. Did you get the same feeling? Why is that?

Quick Review

Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out, challenged, or maybe even confused you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and related Bible verses from this Weekend’s Talk Notes.

The key principle of influence that Pastor Jeff Love emphasized this week is:

  • Use my spiritual gifts to show God’s love to others.
  • Read Matthew 7:12 (p.738)
  • Read 1 Corinthians 12:7 (p.877)
  • How do these verses affect how we should treat each other?
    • Read more about what Paul says about how all gifts are equal and necessary for the church in 1 Corinthians 12:19-31 (p878).
    • Do you know your Spiritual Gift(s)?
      • You can take an assessment to help you gain some clarity. As with any assessment, this is not perfect but is a very good way to begin to better understand your gift(s).
  1. Get along with one another.
    • Read Mark 9:50 (p.770)
      • How can we help someone regain their “saltiness”?
        • By surrounding the person who has lost their way in God’s love can lead to their restoration and Jesus is in the business of restoration
        • This is a wonderful example of why one of our Core Values at Alive Church is Doing Life Together—so we are living in fellowship with others who can help us in this way, and we can help others, as well.
      • When have you had to make an intentional choice to live in peace?
    • (Other “one another” verses about unity: verses: John 6:43, Romans 12:16, Romans 15:5, Romans 15:7, 1 Corinthians 11:33, Galatians 5:15, Galatians 5:26, Ephesians 4:2, Ephesians 4:32, Colossians 3:13, 1 Thessalonians 5:15, James 4:11, James 5:9, James 5:16)
      • Write down the key point of each of those verses.
  2.  Love one another.
    • Read John 13:34-35 (p.823)
      • Love is like the “uniform” of the Christian. It is “how they will know” that we are Jesus’ Disciples.
        • Write down a few ways in which you can put on this “uniform”.
    • (Other “one another” verses about love: John 15:12, John 15:17, Romans 13:8, 1 Thessalonians 3:12, 1 Thessalonians 4:9, 1 Peter 1:22, 1 John 3:11, I John 4:7, 1 John 4:11, Galatians 5:13, Ephesians 4:2, 1 Peter 5:14, Romans 12:10)
      • Write down the key point of each of those verses.
  3. Live in humility with one another.
    • Romans 12:10 (p.866)
      • What is our culture’s view of humility?
      • What is the Bible saying about humility? (See more verses below.)
      • The focus here is doing this within the church. When you have to get on a bike after it’s been a long time since you last rode, within a few moments you are riding like you had never had a break – you don’t have to relearn, it is muscle memory. So, if we can love each other in church, time after time, sooner or later this attitude of love and putting others first will spill out into the workplace and wider family life as it becomes second nature. It is like muscle memory for loving others!
    • (Other “one another” verses on living in humility: Philippians 2:3, Galatians 5:13, John 13:14, Romans 12:16, Ephesians 5:2-12, 1 Peter 5:5)
      • Write down the key point of each of those verses.
    • (Other “one another” verses: Romans 14:13, Romans 16:16, 1 Corinthians 16:20, 2 Corinthians 13:12, 1 Corinthians 7:5, Galatians 6:2, Ephesians 4:25, Colossians 3:9, 1 Thessalonians 4;18, 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Hebrews 10:24, James 5:16, 1 Peter 4:9)
      • Write down the key point of each of those verses.

Digging Deeper

So we are to get along by loving and practicing humility with one another. How can we do this practically? Practicing the “One Anothers” in how we use our Spiritual Gifts is an important key to living an obedient life as a Follower of Jesus.

If you want to dig deeper into seeing how this works, look at the following challenge:

  • See what the early church did in Acts 2:32-47 (p.832).
    • Teaching, Fellowship, Sharing meals, communion, prayer, and worship! There is an emphasis on spending time with each other.  Not just at church on a Sunday. This creates an atmosphere of trust between each other.
    • And as trust grows within the group, so will the use of gifts start to be readily and freely used. This can start with Life Groups and grow into the larger church on the weekend. Remember one of the conversion starters: when you teach someone to swim you did not just throw them in the deep end. Rather you took it slow to build up confidence in the person you were teaching to swim. In the same way, if some is showing a gift for say hospitality what do think the group can do?
  • We all have the same mission and vision as Jesus and we have the same spirit within us, so we should step out in faith, but can start with small steps.  Can you suggest other things we can do or try regarding the Acts passage to show Jesus’ love to others?
    • Remember everybody spends eternity somewhere, and Jesus’ commission to us is to share the Good News.
  • Finally, if we can get it right in our life group, don’t you think it will be easier getting it right with the larger church and beyond?
