Influence – Part 4
August 21-22, 2021
Dr. Jeffrey Allen Love

John 13:1-17

”So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.” John 13:4-5 (p.822)

  • Use My Attitude To Show God’s Love To Others.
  1. Live in humility.

”For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 (p.771)

  1. Follow Jesus’ example.

”And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” John 13:14-15 (p.822)

“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.” Matthew 7:12 (p.738)

  1. Ask: Am I placing myself above Jesus?

“I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.” John 13:16-17 (p.822)

“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.” Philippians 2:5-6 (p.900)

My Next Step This Week:

____ I will ask God for opportunities to serve, I will seek opportunities to serve, I will serve.

Quick Review

Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out, challenged, or maybe even confused you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and Bible verses from the Talk Notes.

The key principle of influence that Pastor Jeff Love emphasized is:

Use My Attitude To Show God’s Love To Others.

Read John 13:1-17 (p.771)

In what ways does our society glorify being served?

How would you have reacted to Jesus—your leader and master—washing your feet? Do you resonate at all with Peter?

Jeff pointed out some key steps to take to help show God’s love to others with a proper attitude.

  1. Live in humility. (Mark 10:45 (p.771)

What makes Jesus’ pronouncement here so significant?

What level of serving is He talking about? Is this a momentary thing?

  1. Follow Jesus’ example. (John 13:14-15 (p.822) and Matthew 7:12 (p.738)
    • What example did Jesus give?

Very literally, Jesus followed through on what He taught in the “Golden Rule” of Matthew 7:12.

  • Have you ever worked for someone who “walked the talk”? How about the other way around?

What are some current ways in which you could “wash the feet” of someone as you served them in humility?

  1. Ask: Am I placing myself above Jesus? (John 13:16-17 (p.822) and Philippians 2:5-6 (p.900)

This is a real challenge: Where in your life are you saying that you are better than Jesus – unwilling to serve?

  • What step(s) can you take—today—to change this?

What attitude did Jesus have?

  • How could our culture—our church—be different if more people had His attitude?

Digging Deeper

This section is to encourage you to study further.

Reread John 13:1-17 (p.822).

  • What other insights do you find as you read the passage again?
    • What else did Jesus teach here besides humility and attitude?

How has technology impacted serving in the last two years? What is missing or wrong? What has improved?

Read 2 Corinthians 6:6 (p.885).

  • Highlight the descriptors for who we are to be and how we should live? What does it mean to your Life Group and you?
    • How does it relate to this week’s study?

Read Galatians 5:13-15 (p. 893).

  • What sinful nature is Paul referring to? What does it mean to your Life Group and you? How does it relate to this study?
