Known – Part 1: New Life

John 3:1-21

Series Memory Verse: “O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.” Psalm 139:1 (p. 476)

  • Jesus Gives Me New Life

“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (p. 884)

  1. Ask

“After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you. Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.’” John 3:2-3 (p. 811)

‘“I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.” John 3:5-6 (p. 811)

“How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked.” John 3:9 (p. 811)

  1. Believe

“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (p. 811)

  1. Come to the light.

“But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.” John 3:21 (p. 811)

“But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.” Romans 7:6(p. 861)

Small Group Questions

One Thing: Jesus Gives Me New Life.

Series Memory Verse: “O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.”  Psalm 139:1
Bible References: John 3:1-21

CONVERSATION STARTER

// Have you ever had the opportunity to speak to someone famous but were afraid to go up to them? Who was it and did you regret not speaking to them?

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

In our passage, we learn that Nicodemus was a Pharisee. Pharisees were a religious group that was concerned with upholding God’s law and keeping ritual purity. The Pharisees believed that it was important to isolate and separate themselves from anything that might defile their clean status and cause them to break God’s law. Nicodemus represented the group of Pharisees that genuinely wanted to know God, but to follow Jesus Nicodemus would have to give up his whole career and identity which at this time was too much for him to let go of.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

// Read John 3:1-2 (p.811). Nicodemus asked Jesus if He is who He says He is.

  • Why do you think Nicodemus says Jesus was sent by God?
  • Why did Jesus respond the way He did?

// Read 2 Corinthians 5:17 (p.884). We are new people in Jesus when we are in a relationship with Jesus.

  • What makes us a new person?
  • What old life is Paul talking about here?

// Read John 3:16 (p.811). Jesus was sent by God for us to have eternal life. We need to believe in Him.

  • What does belief in this context actually mean?
  • What do think is meant by “everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life”?

// Read Romans 7:6 (p.861). We have been released from the Law and have a new life in God’s Spirit.

  • Why would this verse have been important to Nicodemus if he had known it?
  • Why is this truth hard for some to accept? Do you sometimes struggle with the concept of grace?

// Read John 3:21 (p.811). Jesus wants us to come to the light.

  • Why do you think He wants us to come to the light?
  • What is the alternative if we don’t come to the light?

NEXT STEP

___I will respond to Jesus’ calling by choosing to Ask, Believe, or Come to the Light.

DIGGING DEEPER

Read Luke 19:1-10 (p.801). Zacchaeus was a tax collector who met Jesus. Compare this encounter to the passage of Nicodemus. What are the similarities and differences between these men who encountered Jesus? Who did Jesus love?

What lessons can we take away from each of these passages? How can we be open to God’s Spirit transforming us into people He wants us to be and share in the new and abundant life?

Returning to possibly the most famous verse in the Bible, John 3:16, is there anyone you should be sharing the good news of Jesus with this week? Ask God to allow His Holy Spirit within you to guide you to the person who needs to hear how much God loves them. Spread His light so they will not spend eternity separated from Jesus.
