His Mission, My Mission
Legacy – Part 1
July 17-18, 2021
Dr. Jeffrey Allen Love

Luke 15:1-7

Series Key Verse: “Then he said to the crowd, ‘If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.’” Luke 9:23 (p.790)

”Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach. This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people—even eating with them!” Luke 15:1–7 (p.797)

  • Jesus’ Mission Is The Mission Of The Church.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Luke 19:10 (p.801)

  1. Seek out those far from God.

“So Jesus told them this story: ‘If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it?’” Luke 15:3-4 (p.797)

  1. Find common ground with those far from God.

“Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some.” 1 Corinthians 9:22 (p.875)

  1. Personally “make disciples” of the far from God.

“And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders.” Luke 15:5 (p.798)

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you…” Matthew 28:19–20 (p.760)

”In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!” Luke 15:7 (p.798)

  • How would you explain “legacy” to a young child?
  • What legacy (or legacies) are prominent in your family?
    • For example your family might have a strong legacy of turning out school teachers, Or maybe your family has a legacy of being very involved in church or community.
  • What is one legacy you want people to remember you by?

Quick Review

Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out, challenged, or maybe even confused you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and related Bible verses from this Weekend’s Talk Notes.

We began a new Talk Series called “Legacy” this week. The key spiritual principle that Pastor Jeff Love emphasized this week is:

  • Jesus’ Mission Is The Mission Of The Church.
  • Read the Series Key Verse: Luke 9:23 (p.790)
    • What does this mean? How do we—today—take up our cross?
    • Read Luke 15:1–7 (p.797)
      • Have you ever been truly lost, like in the woods or even—as a young child—in a crowd and you got separated from your parents?
        • How did you feel when you were found (or saved)?
    • Read Luke 19:10 (p.801)
      • What does this verse say about Jesus’ mission?
      • Does this mean He has no care for the saved?

Jeff taught us three activities that we can do in order to make Jesus’ mission our mission:

  1. Seek out those far from God.
    • Read Luke 15:3-4 (p.797).
      • What can you do to make this connection?
      • Write down the names of some people you would like to talk with.
      • How can you build a relationship with them?
  2. Find common ground with those far from God.
    • Read Corinthians 9:22 (p.875).
      • What is “common ground”?
      • Why does this help?
      • Who reached out to you when you were “far from God”?
  3. Personally “make disciples” of the far from God.
    • Read Luke 15:5-7 (p.798).
      • Who can you disciple?
      • Who has discipled you?
    • Read Matthew 28:19–20 (p.760).
      • This passage is often referred to as the Great Commission (or CO-Mission).
        • What can you do today to serve WITH Jesus in His Mission?
