Make It A Habit – Part 3
June 12-13, 2021
Dr. Jeffrey Allen Love – Kristi Love – Steve Tanner

Matthew 5:14-16

Series Key Verse: “Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.” Ephesians 4:23-24 (p.897)

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:14–16 (p.736)

  •  You Are The Light Of The World.
  1. Share my faith.

Discussion/Groups Guide from the Weekend TalkFrom the Weekend Talk of June 12-13, 2021
Make It A Habit – Part 3: Regular Spiritual Habits

NOTE: This is an Alive Church God Talks Series,
with three short messages making up the whole of the teaching for this weekend.

Use this guide to discuss the Weekend Talk with your family or friends.

When Life Groups are in session they use questions like these to go deeper into what we talked about on the weekend. Find out more about Groups (in person and online) at alivechurch.com/groups.

Conversation Starters

  • Who have you known who was a “light” in your life?
  • Have you ever seen the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)?
    • Can you remember what you thought at the time?
  • Have you ever been up to Mt Lemmon or Kitt Peak Observatories at night and looked in the galaxies?
    • Did any scripture verses come to mind?
  • Have you ever been on a night hike where the only light you could see is the light of your lantern or flashlight?
    • Did you come across any interesting wildlife?
    • What did you experience/feel having that as the only light around?

Quick Review

Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out, challenged, or maybe even confused you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and related Bible verses from this Weekend’s Talk Notes.

  • Series key verse: Ephesians 4:23-24 (p.897).

The key spiritual principle focused on this week comes from our three speakers: Jeff Love, Kristi Love, and Steve Tanner:

  • You Are The Light Of The World.
    • Todays’ main Bible passage is Matthew 5:14-16 (p.736.)
    • What makes us the light of the world?
    • Do you feel as if you are the light of the world – maybe you are the only follower of Jesus in your workplace or street or maybe the only believer in your family?
      • That can sometimes mean that all your mistakes are reflected back to you by those around you. Have you asked God for help? Have you shared this with anyone or asked for prayer about it?

The three habits we look to this week are Share My Faith, Make Disciples, and Serve.

  1. Share My Faith. (Matthew 5:14 (p.736.); 1 Peter 3:15 (p.936))
    • How easy is it for you to share your faith?  Do you think it comes naturally the way it would discussing a good film or a car or a recipe?
    • Sharing the good news of Jesus comes easier to some than to others.  It can be partly based on personality and background, but it can also in part due to lack of confidence.
      • Do you think it would be helpful to learn how to share Jesus in a way to give you more confidence and overcome personal and cultural barriers? Our Foundations series of classes can help you with this. Let us know if you’d be interested.
  2. Make Disciples. (Matthew 5:15 (p.736.); Matthew 28:19-20 (p.760))
    • What is a disciple?
    • “Disciple” comes from the same root word as “discipline.” Why is this significant?
    • How does it make you feel to realize YOU are a disciple who is called on, by Jesus, to make disciples?
    • When have you grown the most in your journey as a follower of Jesus? Who helped you?
  3. Serve (Matthew 5:16 (p.736.); Mark 10:45 (p.771))
    • What are some creative ways you can serve?
    • Serving is something which will come more easily the more we practice it. We design our Serve Teams to help you get acclimated and trained for your role in serving.
    • Going to build a house in Mexico is a great way to build trust and relationships or decorate an elderly church member’s bedroom or help someone move or taking someone to a doctor’s appointment.
    • There are many ways to serve but an important one you can do is to pray for people – whether the pastors/workers or members at Alive.  That is service – Pray!

THINK ABOUT IT:

  • The Light of the World.
    • When the lights in a stadium all come on you can see everything on the field. But if only one light was on there would not be enough illumination to play the game. That is why when the Church (the Body of Christ) stands together, our light shines brightly into the darkness.
    • We have often said we are called to be part of a church – to encourage each other, worship together, pray together, have fellowship.  When we do this, our small little lights shine out amazingly!
    • Sharing Your Faith.
      • We need to support each other in sharing the gospel – we need to pray for each other and perhaps go with someone when we share the gospel – Jesus sent the disciples out in pairs. Luke 10:1
      • You could invite some work colleagues or neighborhood friends around for a BBQ or watch a game, perhaps as part of a Life Group activity. The first time you don’t have to say much – maybe just give thanks for the food.  Let people see you are ‘sane and safe’ and then build up the relationships – maybe lead up to invite them to a church event – Christmas for example – start in the summer and aim for a Christmas invite?
      • Maybe invite their kids to your kid’s birthday party – again it is to start to build relationships. By inviting colleagues or even family to your home you are making yourself vulnerable – but God honors those who honor him (see 1 Samuel 2:30 (p.212).
