HISTORICAL CONTEXT
When God chose Moses and called him to set the enslaved Hebrew people free, Moses asked God for His name. Names were a big deal in Moses’ time and usually had deep meanings attached to them. God revealed His name to be “I am who I am,” which we traditionally translate as “Yahweh.” This Hebrew name is interesting because God distinguishes Himself as a consistent God, that is not changing and is the same God today as He is for everyone in the past, present, or future.
