Identifying With Jesus
New Identity – Part 2
April 10-11, 2021
Dr. Jeffrey Allen Love

“And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.” Galatians 3:27 (p.892)

(Series Key Verse)“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (p.884)

“Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John…Jesus said, ‘It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires… So John agreed to baptize him. After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water…a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.’” Matthew 3:13–17 (p.735)

”Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19 (p.760)

  • Through Baptism, I Put On My New Identity In Jesus.

”And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross.” 1 John 5:6a (p.943)

1. Join Jesus in His death.

“For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism.” Romans 6:4a (p.861)

2. Join Jesus in His resurrection power.

And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.” Romans 6:4b (p.861)

Next Step:

______ I am choosing to put on my new identity in Jesus through baptism.

______ I am praying that God will use me to lead someone across the line of faith and allow me to help them put on their new identity in Jesus through baptism in 2021.

Discussion/Groups Guide from the Weekend TalkFrom the Weekend Talk of April 10-11, 2021
New Identity – Part 2: Identifying With Jesus

Life Groups use these questions to go deeper into what we talked about this weekend. Dig into them so you will be ready for the discussion at your Life Group. If you are not in a Group, find out more at www.alivechurch.com/groups

You can also use this guide to discuss the Talk with your family or friends.

Conversation Starters

  • Have you ever played on a team?
    • What identified you with your team?
    • IE how did other people know which team you were on?
  • You’ve heard the expression, “He felt like a new man!” or “She felt like a new woman!”
    • When have you “felt new” or, maybe, simply felt refreshed?

Today we’re talking about our identity in Jesus as a new creation.

Quick Review

  • Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out, challenged, or maybe even confused you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and related Bible verses from this Weekend’s Talk Notes.

In his Weekend Talk, Pastor Jeff Love reminded us that…

  • Through Baptism, I Put On My New Identity In Jesus.
  • See Galatians 3:27-29 (p.892); 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 (p.884); Matthew 3:13-17 (p.735); and Matthew 28:19 (p.760); and 1 John 5:6-8 (p.943).
  • Read the verses listed above.
  • List all the ways in which they refer to changes that occur in the life of one who finds their identity in Jesus.
  • What does Paul go on to say about our identity in Christ in…
  • Galatians 3?
  • 2 Corinthians 5?
  • Why did John hesitate to baptize Jesus in Matthew 3?
  • What is OUR role in the whole idea of baptism in Matthew 28?
  • What are the three “witnesses” to Jesus’ identity as God’s Son in 1 John 5?

Jeff then talked about how to take on my new identity in Jesus:

  1. Join Jesus in His death. (Romans 6:1-4a (p.861))
    • Have you ever had to “bury” a bad habit or something else in your life that was harmful?
    • Why was it important to “bury” it rather than just “set it aside”?
    • How does that relate to our need to have our “old self”—our sin—be buried?
    • Do you have a baptism story to tell?
  2. Join Jesus in His resurrection power. (Romans 6:4b-6 (p.861))
    • What has united us with Jesus?
    • What is the next outcome of that unity?
    • What has lost its power in our lives as a result of our “old self” being crucified with Jesus?
      • Have you ever felt like you were a slave to something?
      • How did you feel when you were set free?

Digging Deeper

Read Romans 6. Highlight all of the references to…

  • Your old, sinful self.
    • Your new life in Jesus.
    • Death of sin.
    • Slavery.
    • Freedom.

Read back through the passage and offer it to God as a prayer. Your prayer could begin something like this, as you begin with Romans 6:1 and following….

“God, thank You that your grace is offered to me, but not so I can sin more, but so I can be connected with You. May I die to sin every day as I walk with You. Thank you that I am joined with Jesus in baptism, and that means I am joined in His death—a victory over sin and death….”

  • (And then continue through the passage. You don’t have to address every word of the passage, just pray through the highlights as you ultimately are thanking God for making it possible for you to have this new life in Jesus because of His death and resurrection and grace offered to you.)
