The Parables of Jesus – Part 2: Source of Life
Luke 12:13-21
“What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore justice and the love of God. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.” Luke 11:42 (p.794)
“Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees—their hypocrisy.” Luke 12:1b (p.794)
- Hypocrisy is knowing the truth but not obeying it.
- Hypocrisy is living a self-serving life.
- Hypocrisy is claiming Jesus as Lord without following Him.
- Hypocrisy reduces faith to rigid rules.
- Hypocrisy is outward conformity without inner transformation.
“Then someone called from the crowd, ‘Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.’ Jesus replied, ‘Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?’ Then he said, ‘Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.’” Luke 12:13-15 (p.794)
Defining Greed: the excessive and consuming desire to have more possessions or wealth.
The Rich Fool: “I’ll sit back and say to myself, ‘My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!’” Luke 12:19 (p.795)
- God Is My True Source Of Life.
Ask: How does God want to grow my attitude regarding wealth accumulation?
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’” Luke 12:20 (p.795)
Ask: Is my relationship with God a rich relationship?
“Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.” Luke 12:21 (p.795)
My Next Step This Week: ___ This week, I will dedicate time each day to prayerfully asking God how He wants to grow my attitude toward wealth accumulation and how I can enrich my relationship with Him.
Series Memory Verse: “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (p.907)
