The Separation of Church and Hate – Part 4
October 17-18, 2020
Dr. Jeffrey Allen Love

“Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18 (p.866)

  • God’s Love Calls For Unity.

“Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.” Ephesians 4:3 (p.897)

“’(Jesus)…I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one…’” John 17:20-21 (p.825)

  1. Put following Jesus first.

“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.” Matthew 16:24 (p.748)

  1. Practice civility.

“You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.James 1:19 (p.930)

  1. Pray for unity.

“A kingdom divided by civil war will collapse. Similarly, a family splintered by feuding will fall apart.Mark 3:24-25 (p.763)

“’(Jesus)…I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.’” John 17:20-21 (p.825)

Next Step: ____ This week I will pray daily: “Father help me do my part to unify the body of Christ by focusing on You first and showing love to others.”

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and related Bible verses from this Weekend’s Talk Notes.

This week Pastor Jeff Love encouraged us to remember One Thing from this Talk:
“God’s Love Calls For Unity
.

  • Read “The Prayer of Jesus” in John 17 (John 17:1-26 (p.825*)). After reading John 17 identify the themes from Jesus’ prayer by filling in the blanks:
    • Jesus gives us _____________________. (17:2)
    • Jesus _____________ for us. (17:9, 20)
    • The Father __________________ us. (17:11)
    • Jesus gives us the ______________ of God. (17:8,14)
    • Jesus sets us apart for ____________________________. (17:17-18)
    • We are united with _________________ and ______________. (17:21, 23)
    • We have God’s _________________. (17:23-24)
    • Christ is in _____________. (17:23)
    • Jesus reveals ______________ to us. (17:26)

Digging Deeper

  • Let’s Dig Into The Theme of Unity:
    • Of the themes you have identified, how important is the theme of unity when looking at
      John 17:21? Why?
    • How important do you think the heart of individual believers is as a part of Christian unity? Why?
    • How willing are you to be unified with others who may be completely different from you other than the fact that you both follow Jesus? What does that look like in your life?
  • Read John 13:34-35. Talk about how the command to love and Jesus’ prayer for unity have the same purpose. (John 17:23)
    • To promote unity in the body of Christ, Pastor Jeff encouraged us to take 3 actions:
      • Put following Jesus first. (Mathew 16:24)
      • Practice Civility. (James 1:19) Talk about how and why we should keep our mind, heart, and ears open while keeping our mouth closed longer.
      • Pray for unity. (Mark 3:24-25) Discuss how you think the following will promote unity in Christ and talk about how you will apply this to your life:
        • Focus on the nature, attributes, splendor and holiness of God.
        • Steer clear of persons who closely measure everyone else by their standards.
        • Stay out of endless arguments over worship methods and church traditions.

Next Step
