Mark 4:35-41

Series Memory Verse: “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” Mark 12:30 (p.773)

“’Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.’ So they took Jesus in the boat…But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat…The disciples woke him up, shouting, ‘Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?’ When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Silence! Be still!’ Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, ‘Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?’” Mark 4:35-41 (p.764)

  • Replace Worry With Worship.

“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” Romans 12:1 (p.866)

“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear.” Luke 12:22 (p.795)

“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?… Why do you have so little faith?” Matthew 6:27–30 (p.737)

  1. Pray about everything.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything…” Philippians 4:6 (p.901)

  1. Tell God what you need.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need…” Philippians 4:6 (p.901)

  1. Thank Him for all He’s done.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Philippians 4:6 (p.901)

“The disciples were absolutely terrified. ‘Who is this man?’ they asked each other. ‘Even the wind and waves obey him!’” Mark 4:41 (p.764)

“Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7 (p.901)

This week’s One Thing: The key principle that Pastor Jeff Love emphasized is:

Replace Worry With Worship.

Because the three application points, or “handles” as Jeff called them, come from one verse, be sure to read through these as a foundation for getting into those “handles.”

  • Series Memory Verse: Mark 12:30 (p.773)
  • Read Mark 4:35-41 (p.764)
    • You may have heard the story of Jesus in the boat with the storm before. Did anything stand out in a new way this time around?
    • Have you ever felt like Jesus was not paying attention to your situation? (see verse 38)
    • Jesus’ response in vs. 39 is the same as His command to the unclean spirit in Mark 1:25 (p.761), demonstrating his power over spiritual and physical forces. What does this mean to you in the context of our discussion regarding worshipping Jesus instead of worrying?
  • Read Romans 12:1 (p.866)
    • How can you be a living sacrifice? What does this mean in a practical sense? Why should you?
    • What is worship? Talk about different ways in which you can worship.

Read Luke 12:22 (p.795) and Matthew 6:27-30 (p.737)

  • Jeff said, “It is impossible to do what Jesus said and live-in worry.” What are your thoughts about this?
    • Why does Jesus tie a lack of faith to worry?
    • What do you do when you are tempted to worry?

Jeff encouraged us to focus on 3 “handles” we can grab onto when it comes to being tempted to worry, and they all come from one verse: Philippians 4:6 (p.901)

  1. Pray about everything.
    • How does this work? Everything? Really?
    • What helps you pray? What are some tools or techniques you use to help you remember to pray and to actually pray?
  2. Tell God what you need.
    • Does this seem selfish?
    • Why is this an important part of facing worry?
  3. Thank Him for all He’s done.
    • What have you thanked God for today?
    • What is the result of walking through Paul’s instructions in verse 6? (Hint: see verse 7.)

Digging Deeper (usually to study on your own)

  • A key passage to read and reread is Luke 12:22-34 (p.795). As you read it ask God to help you remember the futility of worry and the peace of God.
    • Read each verse and write down your own paraphrase. Think of it like this: if you worry
  • Remember, life is more than food and clothes (v 22); you’ll miss the meaning of life (v 23); remember, God feeds the birds and will be sure to feed you (v 24); you can’t extend the length of your life (v 25); it’s an exercise in futility (v 26); so on through each verse of the passage.
  • Write them down. Make a list and then pray through Philippians 4:6-7 to remind yourself of God’s way to handle worry.
  • Then turn your focus to the antidote for worry (and other harmful thought processes) by praying through Philippians 4:8 (p.901).
  • One more verse to meditate on is 1 Peter 5:7 (p.937) “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”
