Say What? – Part 3: God’s Victory

Say What? – Part 3: God’s Victory

Joshua 6:1-21

“But the Lord said to Joshua, ‘I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its strong warriors. You and your fighting men should march around the town once a day for six days. Seven priests will walk ahead of the Ark, each carrying a ram’s horn. On the seventh day you are to march around the town seven times, with the priests blowing the horns. When you hear the priests give one long blast on the rams’ horns, have all the people shout as loud as they can. Then the walls of the town will collapse, and the people can charge straight into the town.” Joshua 6:2-5 (p.144)

  • Faith Leads Me To God’s Victory.

“No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.” Romans 8:37 (p.863)

“For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.” 1 John 5:4 (p.943)

  1. Follow the Spirit’s leading.

“So Joshua called together the priests and said, ‘Take up the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, and assign seven priests to walk in front of it, each carrying a ram’s horn.’ Then he gave orders to the people: ‘March around the town, and the armed men will lead the way in front of the Ark of the Lord.’” Joshua 6:6-7 (p.144)

“Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” Galatians 5:25 (p.893)

  1. Obey Him completely.

“On the seventh day the Israelites got up at dawn and marched around the town as they had done before. But this time they went around the town seven times.” Joshua 6:15 (p.145)

“If you love me, obey my commandments.” John 14:15 (p.823)

  1. Shout His praise.

“When the people heard the sound of the rams’ horns, they shouted as loud as they could. Suddenly, the walls of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites charged straight into the town and captured it.” Joshua 6:20 (p.145)

“In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:16 (p.736)

// What was a memorable victory that you had in your life? Maybe a memorable sports game, a career goal, or a relationship? What does it take to be victorious over things?

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

In our passage today we see that God told Joshua about their victory over Jericho before it happened. God wanted Joshua to have faith in God’s victory and His timing. The Israelites had to walk behind the Ark of the Covenant which symbolically meant that they were putting God first in their lives and choosing to follow Him. The Ark of the Covenant was carried by priests and had inside of it the Ten Commandments, which was their Bible at this time. This showcased their faith in God. Joshua sent out priests armed with God’s word to conquer a city, rather than a military.
