The New Normal – Part 2: My Support System

My Support System
The New Normal – Part 2
August 8-9, 2020
Pastor Steve Tanner, Pastor Cody Kiwaczyk

“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” John 13:34-35 (p.823)

Over 30 One Anothers are found in God’s Word, the Bible. They are essential to building a strong Support System for our lives and relationships. One of them is foundational to this Support System: Love one another. (see John 13:34-35 above)

  • Love one another the way Jesus loves me.

The rest of the One Anothers grow from this core. Here are a few of them:

1. Serve one another.

“For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” Galatians 5:13 (p.893)

2. Encourage one another.

“So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (p.907)

3. Support one another.

“Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 (p.894)

Next Step: ___I will sign up today and attend the first 6 weeks of my Life Group.

Conversation Starters

  • Talk about a favorite memory you and your friends have together.
  • How often do you usually keep in touch with your close friends? How has that changed since the pandemic began?
  • What are some of the things you would be sure to say to someone close to you if you knew it was the last time you would see them? What would you be sure to NOT talk about?

Quick Review

  • Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out or maybe even confused you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and related Bible verses from this Weekend’s Talk Notes.

  • This week Pastors Steve Tanner and Cody Kiwaczyk highlighted One Thing to remember from this Talk:
Love One Another The Way Jesus Loves Me. It’s about our Support Systems, with one foundational command from Jesus leading the way: Love one another.

    • Read John 13:33-35 (p.823*)
      • Why do you think Jesus gave us this “new command?”
      • What are the outcomes of “loving one another” that Jesus points out?
      • Based on this passage, some have said that “love” is the “uniform” of the Christian. Talk about how that is so. How do you put on this uniform?
    • Steve & Cody focused on just three of the over 30 “One Anothers” found in the Bible.
  1. Serve one another. (Galatians 5:13 (p.893*) and Mark 9:33-35 (p.770*))
    • How are we to use our freedom? How are we not to use it?
    • What does it mean to “serve one another in love”?
    • In Mark 9, What were the disciples discussing? How do you think they felt when Jesus started talking about being a servant? Can you relate?
  2. Encourage one another. (1 Thessalonians 5:11 (p.907*)
    • What does encouragement look like to you? What encourages you?
    • Who have you known that was/is a good encourager? What made them good at it?
  3. Support one another. (Galatians 6:2 (p.894*))
    • How do you share each other’s burdens?
    • When have you felt like your burdens were being lifted off of you by someone who cared for and supported you?
    • When have you helped share the burden(s) of someone else? How did they respond? Should your sharing of the burden be contingent upon how they might respond?

Digging Deeper

  • Below are a few more “One Anothers” to ponder. Read through them and talk about:
    • How they help build up the Church.
    • How you can demonstrate each one.
      • Comfort one another. (2 Corinthians 1:4 (p.882*))
      • Admonish one another. (Colossians 3:16 (p.904*))
      • Be kind to one another. (Ephesians 4:32 (p.987*))
      • Forgive one another. (Ephesians 4:32 (p.897*); Colossians 3:13 (p.904*))
      • Rejoice and weep/mourn with one another. (Romans12:15 (p.866*))
