You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.” Matthew 4:10 (p.735)

“Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.’”    Matthew 2:1-2 (p.734)

  • I Am Made To Worship The King.

“They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11 (p.734)

“And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them.”

Conversation Starters

  • What was the best part of your Thanksgiving holiday weekend? Did you worship?
  • What is worship anyway? “Adore” is one component of worship. What do you adore?
  • What are some things people tend to worship either in a healthy or detrimental way?

Quick Review

Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out to you, challenged you, or maybe even confused you?

Discussion Starters from the Weekend Talk

Refer to the Talk Notes and Bible verses from the Talk Notes.

This week’s One Thing: The key principle that:

I Am Made To Worship The King.

  • Series Memory Verse: Matthew 4:10 (p.735)
  • Read: Matthew 2:1-12 (p.734).
  • Read: Psalm 115:8 (p.467)
    • Did anything new stand out to you in this famous Bible passage in Matthew? (Note: The Magi/Wisemen were not Jews; Jesus came for everyone!)
    • Why was Herod so upset?
    • When have you gone out of your way to worship Jesus?
    • What do you think about the Psalm we read? How have you seen that happen? Have you been guilty of getting so tied up with material things—or anything else—that it took you away from true worship?

Steve encouraged us to remember that “I am made to worship the King”

  1. By giving Him my best. GOLD. (Matthew 2:11 (p.734); Proverbs 3:9-12 (p.482))
    • How do we give Jesus our best?
    • Proverbs 3:10 speaks of overflowing barns and vats. What does that mean in reality? Is this a promise for prosperity? Or is it a principle for faithfulness that leads to a full life of faith? How do verses 11-12 relate to 9-10?
  2. By recognizing He is God. FRANKINCENSE. (Matthew 2:11 (p.734); Mark 14:61b–62a (p.776); Philippians 2:5-6 (p.900))
    • We addressed this a bit in our Conversation Starters, but what are some things people tend to worship, either intentionally or unintentionally? Does it make a difference that it may occur unintentionally?
    • When have you experienced a time when you just knew that you knew that Jesus is God? Talk about your experience in surrendering your life to Jesus, the King of Kings.
  3. By thanking Him for taking my place. MYRRH. (Matthew 2:11 (p.734); 2 Corinthians 5:21 (p.884); Psalm 100:4 (p.459))
    • Have you ever taken on the punishment deserved by someone else? Perhaps taking the blame at work or school in order to help your friend stay out of trouble?
    • Talk about the fact that Jesus took on OUR sin and became the offering for us.
    • What are some ways you can praise the Lord? This Psalm contains seven imperative verbs (i.e. commanding verbs) for how we enter into Jesus’ presence: shout, worship, come, acknowledge, enter, give, and praise.
    • This is exciting Good News to Praise God for! To whom could you share this Good News this Christmas?

Digging Deeper (usually to study on your own)

  • Read the rest of Matthew 2. Consider what great lengths to which the Wise Men went to come see Jesus and then to avoid an encounter with Herod. Notice and make notes about how God guided all the characters in the account. What stands out?
    • God led the Wise Men and Joseph in dreams. We have the benefit of His Word in an easily accessible way. We have Groups and Teachers to help and challenge us.
      • How has God led you?
      • When you face difficult decisions or circumstances, what do you do?
