The Heart of Christmas
Worship The King – Part 2
December 4-5, 2021
Dr. Jeffrey Allen Love

 Luke 1:26-56

”In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.” Luke 1:26–27 (p.779)

  • The Spirit Of Christmas Lives In Me.

”Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”  1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (p.873)

  1. Realize that I am favored.

“Gabriel appeared to her and said, ‘Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!’” Luke 1:28 (p.779)

“So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.” Ephesians 1:6 (p.895)

  1. Rely on God’s Spirit.

“The angel replied, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.’” Luke 1:35 (p.779)

“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.” Ephesians 3:16 (p.896)

  1. Respond with faith.

”Mary responded, ‘I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.’” Luke 1:38 (p.779)

”And it is impossible to please God without faith.” Hebrews 11:6 (p.926)

Series Memory Verse:
“You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.” Matthew 4:10b (p.735)

My Next Step This Week: ____ I will worship King Jesus by asking Him every day to help me realize that I am favored, that I must rely on His Spirit, and to help me respond in faith to His leading in my life and in every situation I face.

Quick Review

Looking back at your Talk Notes, was there anything you heard in the service that stood out to you, challenged you, or maybe even confused you?

This week’s One Thing: The key principle that Jeff challenged us to remember:

The Spirit Of Christmas Lives In Me.

Series Memory Verse: Matthew 4:10 (p.735)

Background: Matthew 1:23 (p.733) and Luke 1:26-56 (p.779).

See also: 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (p.873); Acts 2:38 (p.831)

  • Have you memorized Matthew 4:10 yet?
  • You may have read Mary’s story many times. Did anything stand out as new or strike you differently this time around?
  • How do you honor your body as the temple of the Holy Spirit?

Jeff challenged us to keep Christmas in perspective by

  1. Realize that I am favored. (Luke 1:28 (p.779); Ephesians 1:6 (p.895))
    • Put yourself in Mary and Joseph’s shoes. What thoughts would be going through your mind?
    • Talk about the fact that as a Follower of Jesus you are favored. Do you feel favored?
    • Mary was favored to be chosen to carry Jesus, which led to us being favored (Note: the same Greek word is used about us In Ephesians 1:6). When I give my life to Him in worship I am favored, I am one of His chosen kids.
    • How do you “favor” your team/family/friends? How does God “favor” you?
  2. Rely on God’s Spirit. (Luke 1:35 (p.779); Ephesians 3:16 (p.896); 2 Corinthians 6:6 (p.885))
    • How does Mary go about carrying the Son of God? Was it by self-will; aspiration; determination? No. It was through totally relying on and trusting in God’s Spirit working in her.
    • How does this resonate with you? When have you totally trusted God to work in you?
    • When do you feel “empowered” by the Holy Spirit?
    • How do you rely on the Holy Spirit to give you the virtues of 2 Corinthians 6:6?
  3. Respond with faith. (Luke 1:38 (p.779); Hebrews 11:6 (p.926))
    • What can we learn from Mary’s response?
    • Why is it impossible to please God without faith?
    • What helps you remember that the Spirit of Christmas lives in you?

Digging Deeper (usually to study on your own)

Read Luke 1 (p.779). There are four main characters mentioned besides the angel: Mary, Elizabeth, Zechariah, and John the Baptist. Look for ways in which all four worshiped the King.

  • Look at how Zechariah responded to the angel compared to how Joseph responded.
    • What are the main differences?
  • What did John do when he heard Mary’s greeting?
    • What does this say about life? (See also Psalm 139:13-15 (p.476)
  • Look at The Magnificat (Mary’s Song of Praise) in Luke 1:46-55 (p.779)
    • What does this tell us about this young teenage girl’s faith?
  • Re-read Zechariah’s Prophecy (Luke 1:67-79 (p.779).
    • Make two lists: #1 What acts does he say God has done? #2 What does the prophecy say God will do? Turn your lists into a prayer back to God to thank Him for what he has done in your life.

My Next Step This Week: ____ I will worship King Jesus by asking Him every day to help me realize that I am favored, that I must rely on His Spirit, and to help me respond in faith to His leading in my life and in every situation I face.
