Follow – Part 1: Forward Motion

Series Memory Verse: “Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.’” Matthew 16:24 (p.748)

Why Does Money Matter To God?

  1. Because it is a matter of the heart.

“And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven?” Luke 16:11 (p.798)

“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Matthew 6:24 (p.737)

  1. Because Satan wants you to serve money.

“For the love of money is at the root of all kinds of evil…” 1 Timothy 6:10 (p.913)

Money promises what only God can give:

  1. Security
  2. Significance
  3. Freedom

The Rich Young Ruler: Mark 10:17-27

  • Follow Jesus By Obeying And Trusting Him With Money.
  1. Ask: What haven’t I done that He tells me to do?

“…There is still one thing you haven’t done,’…“Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.” Mark 10:21-22 (p.771)

  • Those who give live a more blessed life.

“…Remember the words of the Lord Jesus: It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35 (p.849)

  • Generosity results in returned generosity.

“Give, and you will receive… pressed down, shaken together… running over… The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” Luke 6:38 (p.786)

“… Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets filled with holes!” Haggai 1:6 (p.718)

“Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing…” Proverbs 3:9-10 (p.482)

  1. Ask: has self-sufficiency become a deficiency?

“Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ‘How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!’…In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!…’Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.’” Mark 10:23-25, 27 (p.771)
