Devotional Day 30: Buried and Raised

Scripture:
“For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.” Romans 6:4 (NLT)

Reflection:
Something is jarring about the word “buried.” It sounds final. It sounds like the end. But in the Kingdom of God, burial is just the beginning of a miracle. When we go under the water in baptism, we are acting out a funeral. We are burying the old self—the selfishness, the shame, the addiction, the pride. We leave it there, under the surface.

But we don’t stay under. We are pulled up, gasping for air, water streaming down our faces, symbolizing our resurrection with Christ. We rise to walk in a “new life.” I’ve seen people come up out of that water with tears in their eyes and a smile that lights up the room because they feel the weight of their past washing away. Your old grave clothes do not define you. You have been raised to life. Stop digging up what God has already buried. Walk in the freedom of your new life today.

Reflection Question:
What part of your “old life” do you keep trying to dig up? What would it look like to leave it buried and walk fully in the newness Christ offers?
