Devotional Day 31: A Seat at the Table
Scripture:
“For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’” 1 Corinthians 11:23-24 (NLT)
Reflection:
My grandmother’s dining table was a place of wonder. No matter how many people showed up, there was always enough food and always enough room. It was a place of laughter, storytelling, and connection. The Lord’s Supper, or Communion, is God’s version of that family table.
On the night He was betrayed—think about that timing—Jesus didn’t withdraw. He invited His friends to a table. He took bread, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is for you.” In a world that is constantly taking from us—taking our time, our energy, our peace—Jesus offers a meal where He gives. He gives His body. He gives His life. Communion isn’t just a religious ritual to check off a list; it is a personal invitation to sit down with Jesus, receive His sacrifice, and remember that He gave everything so you could have a seat at the table.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for inviting me to Your table. Thank You for breaking Your body so I could be made whole. Help me to never take this meal for granted, but to receive it with a thankful heart. Amen.
