Devotional Day 32: The Cup of the New Covenant

Scripture:
“In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.’” 1 Corinthians 11:25 (NLT)

Reflection:
Contracts are usually signed with ink on paper. They are cold, legal, and often broken. But God didn’t want a contract with us; He wanted a covenant—a deep, unbreakable bond. And He didn’t sign it with ink; He signed it with His own blood.

When we hold the cup during Communion, we are holding the symbol of that promise. The “Old Covenant” was about rules we couldn’t keep and sacrifices that had to be repeated over and over. The “New Covenant” is about grace. It’s about a relationship restored once and for all. The cup reminds us that the price for our forgiveness was high, but Jesus willingly paid it. It reminds us that God isn’t looking for a reason to fire us; He’s bound Himself to us with love that cannot be severed. Every time you drink that cup, you are tasting the promise of His faithfulness.

Reflection Question:
Do you live like you are in a contract with God (based on your performance) or a covenant (based on His promise)? How does the cup of Communion shift your perspective?
