Devotional Day 33: Looking Back to Look Forward

Scripture:
“For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.” 1 Corinthians 11:26 (NLT)

Reflection:
Memory is a funny thing. We can remember lyrics to a song from 20 years ago, but forget what God did for us last Tuesday. We are prone to “spiritual amnesia.” We forget His goodness, His rescue, and His love when the pressure is on.

That is why Jesus gave us tangible things to touch and taste. Bread and juice. Water and baptism. He knew we needed physical anchors for our wandering minds. But Communion isn’t just about looking back at the cross; it’s about looking forward to the crown. The verse says we do this “until he comes again.” It’s a meal of anticipation! It’s like a rehearsal dinner for the great Wedding Feast to come. We look back with gratitude for what He did, and we look forward with hope for what He will do. We are people of the promise, living between the “already” and the “not yet.”

Prayer:
Lord, cure my spiritual amnesia. Use these symbols to anchor my memory to Your cross and my hope to Your return. I wait for You with expectation. Amen.
