Devotional Day 34: One Loaf, One Body
Scripture:
“As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, ‘Take this and eat it, for this is my body.'” Matthew 26:26 (NLT)
Reflection:
I love watching my grandkids share something. It doesn’t happen naturally or without teaching, but when they break a cookie in half and share it, there is a moment of connection—sharing food bonds people.
Communion is the ultimate act of unity. In the early church, rich and poor, slave and free, Jew and Gentile all ate from the same loaf. There was no VIP section. Everyone came to the foot of the cross on level ground. When we take Communion, we are not just connecting with God; we are connecting with every other believer in the room and around the world. We are admitting, “I need Jesus just as much as you do.” It humbles us and binds us together. You cannot honestly share the Lord’s Supper while holding a grudge against your neighbor. The meal itself demands unity. It reminds us that we are one family, fed by the same Savior.
Reflection Question:
Is there anyone in the body of believers you are out of sync with? How can the unity of the Communion table inspire you to seek reconciliation?
