Not Alone – Part 1: Hope in Suffering

Genesis 37:1–11,18–36

  • When Suffering Leaves You With Questions, Let God’s Goodness Lead You To Hope.

Why is this happening to me?

“‘Listen to this dream,’ he said” Genesis 37:6 (p.31)

Instead Ask: How can I trust God while going through this?

– God is good (Psalm 34:8)

– God is faithful (Lamentations 3:22-23)

– God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18)

– God promises deep emotional comfort (Zephaniah 3:17)

God, where are you?

“When Joseph’s brothers saw him coming…they made plans to kill him…’Then we’ll see what becomes of his dreams.’” Genesis 37:18-20 (p.31)

Instead Ask: God, how can I grow closer to you through this?

God, how do I get out of this?

“Meanwhile, the Midianite traders arrived in Egypt, where they sold Joseph to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Potiphar was captain of the palace guard.” Genesis 37:36 (p.32)

Instead Ask: God, what do you want me to learn through this?

“The Lord was with Joseph…” Genesis 39:2 (p.33)

“Don’t be afraid for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (p.548)

Series Memory Verse: “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13 (p.901)

My Next Step This Week: Flip one question every day this week and let God’s goodness write the answer in your heart.

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.” Genesis 50:20 (p.43)
